Working with teenagers can be challenging, but it’s a challenge that can be met with the right approach. At Outcomes Connect, Behaviour Support Practitioner, Mark has unlocked the key: building strong rapport, exploring each participant’s interests, and tailoring sessions to meet their unique needs. This method not only helps participants build skills and discover new hobbies but also reduces risk-related behaviours and restrictive practices, making a lasting impact.
A life-changing fishing experience
One recent example of innovative positive behaviour support involved introducing a new interest to a youth at risk of entering the juvenile justice system. This young person had no structured routine or positive outlets, increasing their risk of engaging in harmful behaviours. The solution? Fishing.
A fishing-themed emotional regulation chart, daily routines, and school holiday activities were crafted to provide structure and purpose. These tools introduced the participant to the joys of fishing while helping them develop new skills and maintain a routine. Over time, the participant began applying these skills in other areas of life, both at home and school.
The participant’s family couldn’t speak highly enough of Mark’s compassionate and person-centred approach to positive behaviour support. Their child now looks forward to sessions every other week.
Implementation – Where real change happens
This work highlights the critical importance of behaviour support plan implementation—the step where plans move from paper to action. At Outcomes Connect, this focus on turning well-crafted positive behaviour support strategies into meaningful change is what sets us apart. The implementation phase ensures that participants, families, and support teams see real, measurable outcomes.
This approach emphasises:
- Building strong rapport and trust
- Exploring and leveraging individual interests
- Providing structured, engaging, and meaningful activities
- Ensuring effective implementation of evidence-based positive behaviour support strategies to reduce risk-related behaviours
- Ensuring every member of the care team feels confident and equipped to implement strategies
By prioritising plan implementation, we bridge the gap between strategy and action, creating real change for participants and their families.
